Strength first before speed

I ran for two consecutive mornings after the Nature Valley Run.

I wanted to work out and maybe, I wanted to make up for the race I didn’t run.

I even put on hubby’s oversized Nature Valley shirt just for good measure.

With my knee pain completely gone, I made sure to stretch, stretch and stretch some more.

I was able to do 6.6k with running plus walking and slow jogging intervals.

I am still learning how to be patient about the whole thing. I want speed. But I keep reminding myself that being fast makes no sense when I suffer an injury or so much pain after. So yes, whether I like it or not, I have to do the run-walk.

As I tweeted the other day, right now, it’s not about being fast. It’s about being strong. And I think my legs are getting stronger. The muscles that used to jiggle under my legs are now hard and firm.

However, the pain on my lower leg which I now learned are called shin splints are still pestering me a bit. Kernan told me that I have to stop running to allow it to heal completely (insert huge resounding “NOOOO!” here) but I don’t want to. I’m stubborn like that.

Besides, I like being in my favorite place.

But I’m not entirely careless, that’s why I’m walking and, most importantly, stopping when I feel any hint of pain.

I’ve finally convinced myself that doing either of those does not mean I’m giving up or I’m weak. It means I’m smart enough to listen to my body and to strengthen it slowly but surely. ;)
